"Old Josie" Dixon

. . .
Our earliest known Dixon ancestor, Josie is the famous patriarch of Elk District, West Virginia. His legend is part of the cultural heritage of the Appalachian Mountains. He died in 1878 (one hundred years before his great great grandson John Edward founded the Clan). Josie arrived in America sometime during the 1770s with his father and two brothers, and they settled across the Ohio River near Fort Wheeling. Life on the Indian frontier in Revolutionary times must have proved too dangerous, and they eventually came back East. Nothing is known of the fate of Josie's father or brothers. He married Keziah Ward in Maryland and moved to Elk District in 1810. It is believed that he lived between 108 and 111 years, and had over 300 living descendants when he died.
