Waiting For Joe
Signed and numbered edition
from maple block, 4 x 3 inches

In contrast to traditional woodcut, a class of relief printing which dates to antiquity and makes use of the plank-side grain, wood engraving was the innovation of Thomas Bewick, who rotated the block in the late eighteenth century to exploit the harder end grain for greater strength and image detail. In addition, wood engravings on blocks milled to the same thickness as lead fonts can be printed simultaneously with composed type.
