Is Freedom
Really Free?
By

I take it for granted every day. I think we all do. Most of my life I
haven't thought twice about it. Freedom. Our most precious gift is freedom.
There has been much conflict over this little word. It is so much more
than just a word. The question is, is freedom really free?
No, it isn't. There has been so much bloodshed over being free. From the
start of the Revolutionary War we as America have paid a price for it.
Men who joined the colonial cause risked from their lives, their farms,
and their family's lives. Also, men starved in Valley Forge as the icy
wind tore at their exposed limbs. They sat and froze while they could
be home with their wives and children. They paid a big price and pulled
through.
During D-Day on Omaha Beach thousands of Americans lost their lives trying
to free the people of Europe from the Nazis. In Kuwait in 1991, U.S. solders
risked their lives to free that country from an Iraqi takeover. The current
War on Terrorism has lead our troops into battle to defend our way of
life and our freedom.
Even before America, since the beginning of recorded history, freedom
has been an issue. Men always wanted power over others. The only way the
oppressed could have freedom is to fight for it. This often meant paying
for it with your own life.
Freedom really isn't free, because so many people want to take it away
and others retaliate and fight to keep it. Why do we put up a fight?
They're trying to take away something that isn't theirs. Nobody gave freedom
to us; it was ours from the beginning. No one has the right to tell us
what to do within reason, from a soldier with an M-16 to a politician
with a brief case. It's a God given right. Even now politicians are trying
to take away freedom.
Freedom isn't free; people should know that by now. I would give up my
life for freedom. September eleventh proved that we are continuing to
pay the price today.
